Music is love (David Crosby)

Wie geht's?

Icons Of Rock is a book by Jenny Boyd (yes, Pattie's sister). It's a collection of interviews conducted by her with a huge range of musicians and rock stars - mainly from the late eighties.

Someone I wasn't previously familiar with is British musician Francis 'Eg' White who started making music in the eighties and is still working currently.

He makes some interesting comments about how songwriting and music has changed in this new, Spotify age.

During his interview he compares mid-sixties, seventies, early eighties to now.

Then, 'it wasn't just self-expression people were aiming for. I think people were genuinely trying to touch something, if not divine, then at least something transformational in themselves that they could then bring into the world. I think the aim was very high at that point'.

He calls the sixties to seventies period 'the golden age', and I agree with him.

Spotify only pays an artist if you listen to a song for 31 seconds. If people skip before then they pay nothing. Clearly a lot of people skip in the first 30 seconds - otherwise why make that the threshold?

Spotify has made music much more accessible, and disposable.

To hold an audience, artists have to capture their listener quickly, and hold them. This means modern pop music has changed a lot, and for me and Eg White - not for the better.

I like that he calls my initial years of collecting music, the golden period. I agree, and I'm very thankful that I was hearing all of those great sixties and seventies bands at first hand.

I also come from a time when we listened to not only whole songs, but, shock horror probe, whole albums! While we were hosting my sister-in-law and brother-in-law during Matariki weekend, Jacky was using Alexa to change songs quickly and it drove me bonkers. But only me.

Music's in my heart, I can't deny; I wake up every day to hear the high (L.A.B)

Wie geht's?

Music soothes me like nothing else.

I ordered a few records last week because it was a cabbage week at work and I needed something to look forward to.

I have a lot of music at home but I noticed a couple of albums on a Vinyl Countdown Facebook page. They often highlight new second hand additions to the store.

One was a pretty obscure Jerry Garcia album called Reflections. It was on my list, so I sent off an order. Being Vinyl Countdown it arrived the next working day.

I put it on last night while JFP watched the news.

Arrrrrr. Nice. I immediately felt my shoulders relax and feet started a-tapping and my heart started a-singing.

Thank you Jerry and thank you Vinyl Countdown and thank you TV One news and thank you OneSchool Global for providing me with a job/wage so that I can indulge my need for music.

The love you take is equal to the love you make (The Beatles)

Having been accused of some grumpiness and curmudgeonliness lately, I wondered this morning, as I pootled along in the Purdsmobile school wards (it's a 40 minute commute so I can ruminate until the cows come home) about the things that make me smile and feel a lovely warm rosy glow at the moment.
Here's five!!

1 Opening the fridge at work and finding milk for my tea. It's something I can sometimes take for granted (when nothings there, there's hell to pay from the staff!).

2 Music: 40 minutes is easily enough time for a CD. This morning it was The Best Of The Guess Who and I sang and beamed and bopped along to American Woman, No Sugar Tonight, Bus Driver, Share The Land and the rest.

3 The sunrise and the hills on my right as I drive in. The view just after Waipawa from a rise in the road is particularly wonderful.

4 Painting the house. WOAH! "Hold up", I hear you say - "You hate painting, Wozza!" Well yes I'm not a huge fan but...but - I love the new paint look. We're painting the house at present and getting rid of the yucky yellow and replacing it with a soothing neutral cream is a great feeling.

5 SWMBO: I watched a great TED talk recently (it'll be on this week's Jewels For The Thirsty blog so watch out for it) about how happiness is aligned to your key relationship. Thanks LOML!
